The spiritual journey is not always preceded by a brightly illuminated path. No, sometimes we must stumble forward into and through darkness. An authentic spiritual walk will, in fact, be inherently characterized by occasional periods of darkness. We can’t always be perched atop our glorious mountain, so near to our bright and shining sun. No, there are still shadow laden valleys below, into which we all must descend. We can’t constantly be spiritually hydrated, full of pliable and elastic confidence. There will most assuredly be times of scorch and dryness. The honest and evolving spiritual life will introduce each of us to all of life’s offerings. Life is a balanced art. The journey must start there.
