Bill Maher may lose his job over his most recent comments about the Catholic Church and the Pope. Can the comments he made on his HBO show be classified as hate speech? The people at Fire Bill Maher think so. It seems more likely that Bill is just trying to cash in on the book buying crowd faithfully following authors like Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris. Bill is, after all, an advisory board member of Harris’s The Reason Project.

Hmmm… is there a campaign started for him to keep his job? I don’t always agree with Maher but I think that we need voices like him. And he IS hilariously poignant. His comments on the 9/11 hijackers was spot on and I applaud his dealing with the flak despite ABCs cancelling of that show.
I appreciate Maher’s libertarianism, but abhor his approach to religion and faith. He’s mature politically, but juvenile as concerns religion (all religions) and faith.
As regards his comments re: 9/11, I couldn’t disagree more with him. Those handful of guys who flew planes filled with innocent people into buildings filled with more innocent people were anything but heroes. Many people lost their friends, moms and dads, and brothers and sisters that day. There are names for them, but my own blog standards prevent me from actually typing them here.
Ahhh my friend but he didn’t call the highjackers heroes he was responding to people calling them cowards. Here is what he said: “We have been the cowards, lobbing cruise missiles from 2,000 miles away. That’s cowardly. Staying in the airplane when it hits the building, say what you want about it, it’s not cowardlyâ€.
I agree that his approach to chastising religion is often quite juvenile… but I guess I expect that.
Obviously they aren’t heroes. God people who feel that way.

I hear you, bro. But given the context and the severity of the issue (9/11), I think his statements were very unhelpful. I see no way of redeeming them at all. THEIR staying in the airplane may not have been “cowardly,” but forcing a bunch of people to ride it with them - against their own will - sure is! To minimize THIS fact just to take a shot at Bush (Bush made the coward statement) tells you where this guys head and heart were/are … He’s a sensationalist. We don’t need anymore sensationalism from either side of the political fence. If prioritizing the grossly sensational over the most important aspects of a huge event like 9/11 gets you fired, then so be it. You deserve it.
