BIC Listening Forward: Changing the Name?

The emerging vision for the Brethren in Christ 2010-2020 is both brave and bold. Times are changing and so should one’s church. The executive branch of the BIC understands this well, if the vision cast is any indication. The overarching BIC vision for 2010-2020 - which was provided in a nine-point, rough draft, vision-laden outline called “Listening Forward: Emerging Vision Themes 2010-2020″ during the recent new pastors orientation meet-up at Grantham, PA - will undoubtedly focus forward and cause a bit of controversy. Aspects of the vision will require a lot of flexibility by those who have overtly embraced the tradition fostered by their own immediate experience and time. Read More »

Downe In Yon Forest by Kemper Crabb

A growing number of web marketers and publishers send relevant products specifically for review here at Tribe (e.g. books, music, curriculum, etc.). In fact, I’m 20+ products behind at the moment! Don’t worry, I’m digging my way out! At any rate, the point I want to make at the moment is that every once in a while a sent product really, really excites me. Don’t mishear me! A lot of the products reviewed are really great and highly recommended resources (some are awful too)! It’s rare that a product sent actually excites me too! I received just such a product this morning. Read More »

Confessions of a Good Christian Guy

Confessions of a Good Christian Guy: The Secrets Men Keep and the Grace that Saves Them

Confessions of a Good Christian Guy is written by Tom Davis and Tammy Maltby and is published by Thomas Nelson Publishers

Henry David Thoreau’s Walden compilation launches with an essay titled “Economy” in which he writes: “The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation. What is called resignation is confirmed desperation…” Thoreau specifically wrote concerning what he perceived to be self-imposed slavery to self-powered systems (i.e., our work and those for whom we work), but the quote could be applied to a much broader set of circumstances and social scenarios, as far as men are concerned. Confessions of a Good Christian Guy: The Secrets Men Keep and the Grace that Saves Them begins where Thoreau’s famous quote - misapplied or not - stops. After all, it’s one thing to identify the problem but it’s another thing to actually offer a solution or fix. Tom Davis and Tammy Maltby not only identify several key spiritual issues that men everywhere wrestle with, but also offer practical, Biblical solutions meant to encourage individuals to look towards God for complete renewal.

BIC Listening Forward: Emerging Vision Themes

Monday and Tuesday were spent in Grantham, PA at the Brethren in Christ New Pastor’s Orientation Seminar. It was a wonderful time filled with brand new - and renewed - denominational connections, distinctive historical and theological lessons, and bold visions for the denomination’s future. My wife and I are already pretty familiar with the history and theology of the church, so our personal highlight reel is mostly composed of items belonging to the ‘new connection’ and ‘future vision’ categories. Is America an Empire?

Slapping the “EMPIRE” sticker on anything remotely American is the vogue thing to do in the progressive Christian camp, but is it an accurate charge? Tony Jones thinks not, and he raises some pretty solid points regarding the matter in a post titled The Waning Days. Personally, I think there is a lesson to be learned in the simple idea that an empire could be an oligarchy, but an oligarchy need not be an empire to be as detrimental - or anti-kingdom of God - as an empire.

This Is Not What Jesus Looked Like

Please be sure to read the story behind the title and picture at Flickr. It is an exceptional example of some pretty sad thinking about Jesus of Nazareth. Click the photo and read the story at Flickr.

One Extraordinary Day by Harold Myra

One Extraordinary Day

One Extraordinary Day is written by Harold Myra and is published by Tyndale House Publishers, Inc.

Christian fiction is not a section of the bookstore I frequent regularly, if at all. I am not a fan of the genre because quality Christian fiction is such a rarity. William P. Young’s The Shack is a rare and contemporary exception to this general rule, obviously. The Shack is Christian fiction at it’s very, very best; Harold Myra’s One Extraordinary Day (Tyndale House 2008), however, is not. One Extraordinary Day unfortunately is an example of the worst of cliched Christian fiction.
