In Memory of Dr. Janice Gable

Dr Janice GableDr. Janice Gable, professor of English and chair of the Arts and Science Department at Valley Forge Christian College, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, June 14th, 2008. Dr. Gable was a special teacher. In fact, she was beyond special. She was one of those teachers who actually showed up because she truly wanted to challenge and stretch the imaginations and minds of her students. Not all teachers care about such things; Dr. Gable was not one of them. She was not only instrumental in expanding my own cultural and literary horizons, but also became one of the few catalysts that lovingly nudged me towards deeper spiritual formation in an authentic and serious way.

Dr. Gable introduced this serious English underachiever to the likes of Gish Jen, Molière, Sophocles, Mary Shelley, Christopher Marlowe, Herman Melville, Stephen Crane, Joseph Conrad, Franz Kafka, Euripides, and way too many others to recall off the top of my head. I traveled through English, American, and World Literature with Dr. Gable. Then there was the Creative Writing course a handful of us spent with her. What a riotous joy! Those classes are still cherished highlights of my undergraduate studies in theology. Dr. Gable was a gift from God. She was a special professor. Read More »

A Wolf in Sheep Garb Camps at Cornerstone

Sometimes there is more to a visitor than meets the eye! Self-proclaimed atheist Matt Taibbi decided to go undercover and spend some time in Pastor John Hagee’s Cornerstone Church. His goal was not spiritual enrichment, scriptural enlightenment, or Christian fellowship; Taibbi was motived by dirt. He wanted to get some dirt on Hagee and those ‘wacky evangelicals’ who call Cornerstone Church home. So, he signed up and participated in one of Cornerstone’s Encounter Weekends and there misrepresented himself, terribly. Read More »

ASBO Jesus Cartoon

… think about the above cartoon for a bit this morning.

We Voted for Obama and We’re Republican!

“We voted for Obama and we’re Republican!” Mr. Fredericksen said. “Obama is the voice of hope and change. We like McCain too, but he doesn’t need our help in this election.” Read more about today’s Potomac Primaries.

I’m Voting For Someone in 2008!

Like a few of my closest friends in the blogosphere, I am hesitant to announce who I am supporting and voting for in this election. I tend to not enjoy the political questions and arguments that follow such personal announcements. I’m also a pastor of a young church plant too. So, before I announce to whom my vote is going, I’ll simply say this: My personal political alignments and announcements do not in any reflect the positions of the church or people I serve. OK? OK.

Barack Obama!

Man, that felt good! I’ve been wanting to shout that out for some time now. I really, really think and feel that this guy is something different. He’s someone we need in a disparaging time like this. We are watching history.

Making Sense of the Incarnation Notes

Simply knowing that God has moved into the neighborhood is not the same thing as living like God has moved into the neighborhood. Said differently, you may know God is near, but how do you interact with this God? What difference does the Incarnation make in your life or the way you live your life? God is in our midst! The Kingdom of Heaven is within you and all around you! So what!?! Read More »

The Final Live-Redesign of Lo-Fi Tribe is Now Complete

What probably will be the final re-design of Tribe is now complete. I needed a distraction for a few hours and as usual I found the joy that is rearranging Tribe to be more than distracting enough for me and my busy mind. So, it is done. I like it too. I’m really weary of the blog or blog-ish looking front page, and though the proverbial perimeter is limited in this medium, I tried to push as far up against it as my limited skills would let me. I like it. That’s what matters at the end of the hour. Read More »

Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die by Heath

A new friend and Inner Metro Green member recently dropped off a signed covenant letter, a wonderful monetary gift for the burgeoning church, and a great book for me. Events like this are as exciting as a seven year old’s Christmas, at least for church planters. There is still a lot of work to do, and we are still in our infancy stage, but the church plant is beginning to take root and sprout! Keep on praying for us and our wonderful city. Read More »
