Living Water Living Color

John 7:37 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’”

Our everydays are filled with beautiful and wonderful things but even the most beautiful and the most wonderful things of this world satisfy neither the thirst we have for the Divine, nor our deep desire for Sacred Community. Thirsty, and driven, we search madly for a hidden spring. When we stumble upon this hidden spring, or when God gracefully leads us to it, a much deeper understanding is born within each of us as we thankfully drink. A much bigger painting is revealed to us. Its living color points us towards a God who completely loves, embraces, satisfies, and challenges. This amazing painting hangs there, quietly, living on the face of today, and begs us to keep painting it together. This is Divinity; this is sacred community. We all thirst for these things, deeply. Our thirst is satisfied as we drink from a hidden spring.

Trinity as Model for Church Community

Jesus’ prayer in the 17th chapter of John’s Gospel is that we would be as one. Unity! Let’s put this prayer in perspective. Jesus and his disciples gather in a small upper room. They gather there for one purpose: to share the Passover meal. They sing a few songs together, praise God, pray a lot, eat, and drink their wine. During this meal, Jesus institutes our sacrament of the Last Supper. He also washes the feet of the disciples. Jesus, after they finish with all of this, prays the John 17 prayer.

Jesus either prays this prayer right there in the room, upon completion of the other events shared, or he prays it as they walk towards the Garden of Gethsamene, where he prays some more while the disciples pass out under a tree from too much Passover wine. Jesus knows what is coming. He knows he’s going to be arrested, tried, and killed. How important is this prayer for unity in light of this foreknowledge? Seriously! Jesus, knowing full well death is imminent, prays first that these disciples find unity; the same unity that he shares with the Father. Read More »

Jesus Christ as The True Vine in John 15.1-7

ASV John 15:1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.
